no man is an island, entire of itself, every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. if a clod be washed away by the sea, europe is the less. as well as if a promontory were. as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. john donne, 1624
we bought this vinyl after watching pj harvey at primavera sound festival in barcelona and then at nos primavera sound in porto. we heard a lot about pj harvey on being a goddess of rock, but what we found was a lot more. at first we though it would be a very loud performance. but she was sublime, full of brass and strings, choirs and drums all in a perfect and accurate combination with her voice. let england shake is an 2011 album who features beautiful tracks like “let england shake”, “the words that maketh murder”, “on battleship hill” or “the glorious land”. “what is the glorious fruit of our land? its fruit is deformed children. what is the glorious fruit of our land? its fruit is orphaned children.” let england shake, pj harvey, 2011
its, beyond question, the longest night in porto. friends and family reunite to celebrate s. joão in a popular fashion walking around the city to find a nice spot to mount their grill to roast sardines and pork, drinking some wine and sharing stories and laughs. popular or portuguese folk music is essential, all the hits must be played to cheer everyone up. the bravest moment of the night is to launch a s.joão ballon. its a group work, with great expectations. its always an unforgettable moment when someone successfully put the ballon up, dressing the sky with flickering lights as in a starry night. around midnight, the fireworks over the bridge “d.luís” marks the highest momentum of the night. from that, the tradition says that you should walk along the river “douro” until the coast. not so easy to do after some drinks, but you should try it once in your life. i waited one long hour for you and I would wait a year. say: should i wait some more, or won’t you could not love …
the best vegetarian restaurante we ever visit. its not easy to cook vegetarian or vegan food, but “rotas” really knows how to do it. simple and delicious food at a comfortable place. their version of tiramisu with “bolo levedo” (the traditional sweet bread) is to eat and ask for more. often fully booked so make sure to reserve a table.
how we could not think on “the infinity and beyond” with this scenario all by ourselves. s.miguel, azores | may 2015
